13. Write a letter to your future college roommate introducing yourself and your background.

Dear Future Roommate,

My name is Nancy Alvarez. I am a very friendly person who is very tolerant and can get along with almost anybody. I'm looking for someone who will not divert me from my education, because that is my number one priority at the moment. Of course we will be able to have fun when its the appropriate time, but we need to have discipline and get on task when we have to. If you ever need my help I will be more than happy to help, so I expect the same in return from you. If you ever do something with which I do not agree, or feel like you are jeopardizing my education in any way, believe me, I will let you know right away. I know this might sound somewhat harsh, however, I am only trying to be as honest and open with you as possible. I look very forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,
Nancy Alvarez

9. Given the authority to establish a holiday, what would you choose to commemorate? Why? What would the celebration look like?

If i had the authority to establish a holiday, it would be to commemorate the famous astronomers such as Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo Galilei, Sir Isaac Newton, Edmund Halley, Edwin Hubble, Carl Sagan, and Stephen Hawking, and their contributions to the space race. Thanks to these astronomers scientists have discovered many things about the endless void called space, outside of Earth. Some of these discoveries even contributed to learning more about the planet we live in. Constantly viewing Orion, the Little Dipper, and other obvious constellations every night, I've come to realize that we outshine many stars with the millions of lights each city has. So this holiday would require for the country to turn off all its electricity for 1 full night. Many people busy with their daily lives ignore the night sky and its beauty. This beauty is limited by the lights as well. Turning off the lights in the country would light up the night sky with billions of stars that were not visible because of the own light that we have created, and would allow everyone to take a break and see the beauty that the sky really is and space itself. So much energy would be saved from this holiday. 1 issue with this holiday would be security of people's private property and their own protection so i would ask for the police force to be on high alert and patrol the cities all night to keep everyone safe. Being a child of the Technology Age, I've come to realize that sooner or later the natural resources of this world will be exhausted and that is when we will all need to take off into space in search of resources to continue with our existence and if it weren't for these such astronomers and more, we'd be jumping in blindly to an endless abyss with no idea of what is out there. So this holiday would raise awareness of astronomers and their contributions and would thank them for all they have done.

10. What is the best advice you've ever received? Explain.

Throughout my lifetime, I have received incredibly deep and meaningful advice from many different people. Some of the best advice I have ever received is probably from my grandmother. I consider her to be a very wise person since she has lived through many, many difficult experiences, which in my opinion, have made her the great person she is today. Her and my uncle, (her son), have a random phrase that they started saying out of nowhere... "No te claves en la maroma del piojo." Literally translated, this would not make any sense. However, the figurative meaning is much more comprehensible. What this saying pretty much means is that you shouldn't worry too much about the little things, especially the ones you cannot change or do anything about anymore. Stop trying to analyze every single detail about a situation, about little, insignificant things, (in this case which are represented by the lice. Another piece of advice I could link this to, is what my biology teacher, Mr. Manroe, once told us. He talked to us about "Problem vs. Inconvenience".

1. Pretend that you are talking to a blind man and have to describe for him what "red" is. You should use narrative and descriptive writing techniques, and try to appeal to his other senses!

Red is hot. It is warmth, but that warmth can turn into a rage that burns. It is not only pride but passion. When becoming excited many people see red. It is an intense color and dense. When you bleed, you bleed red. Many things in life are painted red. Houses, cars, tables, stop signs, and much more. Animals are not painted red but are naturally red. Red is the color that is created from light and coloration.

8. If you were to describe yourself using a quotation, what would that quotation be? After you have chosen a quote, then write a bit about how it relates to you and reveals what kind of person you are.

A quotation that I can relate to is, "Rather than love, than money, than faith, than fame, than fairness... give me truth." I discovered this quote from a movie called Into The Wild, although the original quote is from Henry David Thoreau. This quote really struck out to me, it simply was one of those you remember for the rest of your life. It just... makes sense. I would much rather have "truth" above anything else. Why would I want somebody's love, if they aren't being completely honest with me? I wouldn't want fame, because most of the people that admire you anyway, don't REALLY like you, most of the time they want something out of you, or are only following a trend. Why would I take someone's faith and blindly believe in it without being certain of anything, although, that's what faith is- not needing any substantial evidence in order to believe something.

14. Please describe your reactions/ideas to the following quote: "He does not possess wealth, it possesses him."

I believe that what this quote is saying is that when a man has a lot of wealth, (money for example), they tend to get carried away with that feeling of "power" and take advantage of it, almost in an uncontrollable way. They are so infatuated by it that they can't seem to think clearly, like they are possessed by it. They probably will do things with that money that they would've never done before. People who can't control themselves with money will probably and most likely spend it carelessly, and in less time than they think, it will all be gone.
15. What is the most valuable contribution you could make to a college campus? Explain.
